Freight+Volume is pleased to present its third season of the DNA artist-in-residence program for Summer 2014. DNA Gallery is pleased to present the results of its inaugural artist-in-residence program for Summer 2012. Twenty artists were selected for one- and two-week residencies on the Cape this season, to create new work inspired by their environment, either created in the gallery or offsite. They were offered an apartment in nearby Eastham and workspace at the gallery in Provincetown, and the ensuing art they produced is spectacular. Mostly New York-based, many of the artists exhibit regularly at curator and gallery-owner Nick Lawrence's sister gallery in NYC, Freight+Volume (while others traveled from as far away as Portugal to participate).
In many cases the artists shifted their preferred media (painting to photography or sculpture to sound work, for example), to better interpret their new surroundings. Some brought studio work they had begun in the city to complete, with fresh eyes, in the country. Others created work specifically in response to the gallery space and their explorations of the Cape. All are unique and original reactions to an inspirational area - like the shifting dunes and tides - always in flux.
