In my recent paintings I continue to explore how humans and other species might adapt, form connections, or simply survive amidst a world in turmoil. In Dehibernation, a woman with a lion's tail crawls out of a cave with two babies in tow, only to discover that the world has grown silent around her. Though at times cautionary, the work is not without humor. A very earnest Bananaman, a figure half man, half banana, flies through the air like Superman on a mission.
Two of my newest works are presented as Thanka paintings, referencing the Tibetan scroll paintings that could be carried from one shrine to another. A silk curtain is mounted atop each painting. It can be raised or lowered to reveal or hide the image below. In Lord Qwerty, an infant god with keyboard teeth sits amidst lily blossoms, thumbs poised ready to text. In SHIVA (Fire + Ice), a many limbed lobster evokes the Hindu god of destruction and rebirth. The lobster and a nude woman dance, locked in a sexual embrace and seemingly oblivious to the maelstrom around them.
